Monthly News

Welcome to Grade 5

On Monday, September 29, the school was divided into our colour groups and spent a day engaging in activities surrounding the theme of Powwow.  Students watched videos, heard a story about the Powwow and participated in some Indigenous type activities which took place outside.

On Wednesday, October 1, we gathered for an assembly in regards to Orange Shirt Day.  We heard a Turtle Island story and completed activities in regards to how we can take care of Turtle Island.

In Language Arts, students are working on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write.  We have begun our Communicating Skills grammar workbook.  We will soon begin comprehension stories as well as working on our handwriting skills.

In  Social Studies, we continue working on our first cluster about "First Peoples."  We read some information about the woolly mammoth and then students completed comprehension type questions.

In Science, our first unit is, "Maintaining a Healthy Body."  We reviewed how nutrition labels and ingredient lists help us to eat healthier.  We discussed what foods make up our diet and then brainstormed healthy and unhealthy foods.

In Math, we continue our unit on Patterns.  As a class we looked at extending number patterns by identifying whether or not the number sequence increased or decreased.  Looking at In/Out boxes, students need to identify the rule in which to use when solving for the numbers given  Mad Minutes are being used to practice our basic skills, and problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.
