Monthly News

Welcome to Grade 5

Students are slowly getting back into the routines of school.  Our first full week had the Grade 5's getting right into each subject area, with some having work to take home to finish.

In Language Arts, students will be working on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write.  We have begun our Communicating Skills grammar workbook.  We will soon begin comprehension stories as well as working on our handwriting skills.

In  Social Studies, our first cluster is titled, "First Peoples."  This first cluster looks at the Ice Age, what happened, and how the First Peoples came to Canada.  Students worked on a title page after our discussion.

In Science, our first unit is, "Maintaining a Healthy Body."  We had a class discussion on what it means to have a healthy body.  Students worked on a title page with ideas we brainstormed.  We looked at examples of nutritional labels that can be found on food items and discussed what information they provide.  An assignment in regards to nutritional labels was given out, including a question that requires students to look at labels at home.

In Math, we began our unit on Patterns.  We looked at patterns with blocks forming towers.  Students built pyramids with marshmallows and toothpicks.  We took the information from both exercises to set up a table/chart as well as to fill in a graph with our results.  Mad Minutes are being used to practice our basic skills, and problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.

Feel free to check out our blog to find out what the Grade 5's are up to!!!  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
