Monthly News

Welcome to Grade 5

A good time was had by those families who braved the cold to come out to our Family Fun Winter Dance.  It was great to see some of our students dancing and having fun.

In Language Arts, students continue to work on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write.  We continue in our Communicating Skills grammar workbook.  Students are also reading and answering questions with our comprehension stories.  We have begun looking at handwriting as well.

Novel Study:  We are working on our novel, "Pay it Forward," the young reader's edition.  We have met Mr. St. Clair, Chris Chandler, Arlene, and Trevor.  Ask your son/daughter who each of the characters are, and what is special about each of them.

In Social Studies, with a partner, students used an atlas to label specific bodies of water on a map of Canada.  They looked for, found, and labeled the oceans, some lakes, and some rivers.

In Science, we continue working on, "Maintaining a Healthy Body."  As a class, we discussed the Skeletal, and Muscular Systems.  Students completed comprehension type worksheets about "Our Body, and Our Muscles."  They also compared/contrasted the skeletons of a frog and turtle, listing what bones they have that are the same, and the ones that are different.

In Math, we continue our look at Multiplication.  We have been looking at multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000.  Students have also been completing questions using mental math where 1 of the factors is a multiple of 10.  We are practicing our basic facts using worksheets, Mad Minutes, as well as the game, "I Have, Who Has?".  Along with the basic facts, students are solving 2x1 and 3x1 questions.  Word problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.
