Monthly News

Welcome to Grade 5

I hope that all my students and their families have had a wonderful Christmas, and a Happy welcoming of the new year, 2026!!  I hope that we have all had a restful holiday and are ready to get back to the routines of school.

In Language Arts, students continue to work on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write.  We continue in our Communicating Skills grammar workbook.  Students are also reading and answering questions with our comprehension stories.  We have begun looking at handwriting as well.

In Social Studies, we continue working on our first cluster about the "First Peoples."  We discussed all the synonyms that have been used to name the First Peoples.  Today, the term we use is Indigenous People.  With a map of Canada, we looked at different groupings of the First Peoples who were here in Canada.

In Science, we continue working on, "Maintaining a Healthy Body."  We review the process of digestion beginning with food entering our mouth.  We also completed a naming the body parts involved with digestion, what they look like and their role.

In Math, during the 2 weeks before our Christmas holidays, students were given a booklet with pages focusing on  basic multiplication facts, as well as addition and subtraction of decimals.  If this booklet wasn't completed before the break, I hope that it was finished over the holidays, and will be handed in on the first day back. Mad Minutes are being used to practice our basic skills, and problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.

Feel free to check out our blog to find out what the Grade 5's are up to!!!  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
