Welcome to Grade 5
The first week of Advent is all about Hope, teaching kids that God always keeps His promises and Jesus' coming brings light and hope to the world, like a light in the dark, reminding us to wait expectantly and be ready for Jesus' arrival. It's about trusting God's faithfulness, just as people waited for the Messiah, and practicing hope through actions like being kind and sharing smiles.
Parents, report cards will be coming home this week. Please review the report with your child and return the parent comment sheet. The report is your copy to keep at home.
In Language Arts, students continue to work on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write. We continue in our Communicating Skills grammar workbook. Students are also reading and answering questions with our comprehension stories. We have begun looking at handwriting as well.
In Social Studies, we continue working on our first cluster about the "First Peoples." First, students worked through a word cycle in regards to the ice age and how the First Peoples arrived in Canada. We then went over it as a class. Students also listened to a Turtle Island story and a discussion was held as to the influence of the land and environment on the First Peoples.
In Science, we continue working on, "Maintaining a Healthy Body." We have begun discussing the systems within our body. Our first system is the Digestive System. We watched the Magic School Bus episode, "Lunch," which goes through the process of digestion. In discussing digestion, we looked at the body parts involved in the process.
In Math, the Patterns test has been written, corrected, and will be going home shortly for parents to see, sign, and return. In the 2 weeks before the break, students will be given a booklet with pages focusing on basic multiplication facts, as well as addition and subtraction of decimals. Mad Minutes are being used to practice our basic skills, and problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.
