St. Gerard School held its annual Halloween Family Fun Party on Friday, October 24. It was great seeing all the families that came out to play games, listen/dance to the music, and mingle with staff and other families.
In Language Arts, students are working on a weekly Spelling unit, with a pre-test on Monday, an assignment to complete, and a test on Friday with a bonus word and sentences to write. We continue in our Communicating Skills grammar workbook. Students are also reading comprehension stories. We have begun looking at handwriting as well.
In Social Studies, we continue working on our first cluster about the "First Peoples." A class discussion was held on the question, "How do we know about the past?" Students came up with some of the ways we know and learn about the past. For example, we can use the internet/library to research certain topics; we can find out what archeologists have found in regards to artifacts that have been dug up; we can also read creation/oral tradition stories that tell us about how the First Peoples got here, just to name a few.
In Science, we continue working on, "Maintaining a Healthy Body." We reviewed the test we conducted to find out if a food product has starch in it. We also completed reading and discussing information food labels have on them so that we are aware of what is in the foods we eat. Students worked on a comprehension type assignment about sugar. They also read and answered questions about how to make healthier choices when putting a meal together.
In Math, we are close to finishing our unit on Patterns. We have been working on problem solving by placing the information read into a chart and then completing the chart to answer the question. We will have a brief introduction to Algebra, and then a final test date will be given.
Mad Minutes are being used to practice our basic skills, and problem solving will take place throughout the whole year.
